Watermelon is believed to have originated in southern Africa, where it is found growing wild. There are more than 1200 varieties of watermelon, ranging in size from 1 lb – 200 lbs. Watermelon has about 6% sugar and 92% water by weight and is a source of vitamin C.

Watermelon rinds are safe to eat, and sometimes used as a vegetable. In China, the rinds are stir fried, stewed, and pickled.
